Title: Speakeasy (True North #5)
Author: Sarina Bowen
Release date: May 29th 2018
Sometimes you fall for Mr. Right. And sometimes for Mr. Right Now…
Did you hear the one about the girl who walks into a bar and catches her live-in lover kissing someone else? No? You’re the only one in town who missed it.
Luckily Alec is there to wrap me up in strong arms and carry me out the door before things get too ugly. And that’s not all Alec is good at. Our unexpected chemistry makes him the perfect rebound guy.
I should know better than to hook up with my rival’s little sister, but the fiery look in May’s eyes really turns my crank. She needs cheering up, and I’m just the guy for the job.
It’s not like I’ll fall in love. Not even after a string of scorching hot trysts, and the realization that we’re good at the same things: wild nights and familial disappointment. I don’t do love, never have, never will. So this is the perfect arrangement, for both of us.
Nobody would approve, but nobody has to know…
It’s been a while since a True North book was released and OMG it feels so good to be back in this world! I missed it so much!
Speakeasy is a standalone and can be read as one but to fully enjoy it, you should read all the series, just to know more about all the characters present in this book, you won’t regret it, each book is awesome.
Speakeasy is the story of May and Alec. May is Griffin’s sister from book 1, Bittersweet. She is a lawyer and work with her mentor in a tiny office. She is also Lark bestfriend from book 2, Keepsake. She is bisexual and was in a relationship with a girl at the beginning. But one night, she passed in front of Alec’s bar and saw her girlfriend’s car. She decided to enter the bar just to kiss her but instead she saw her kissing her ex. What you should know about May is that she is 18 months sober but still sometimes struggle with her addiction.
Alec is the bar owner. He know May from a long time ago, if you remember, in Bittersweet (I think it was in this book), at the end he dances with her at the wedding.. Anyway, he was the one to see first that May’s girlfriend was cheated on her and took a photo of it as proof. Even if a lot of people comes to his bar to taste Vermont beers, the bar still struggle. At the beginning of the book, he has a friend with benefits type of relationship with his beer supplier.
So May and Alec relationship starts at the beginning as a « rebound multiple nightstands » for May and just as a enjoyable nightstands relationship for Alec. But as we all know, after some times and events, feelings appear for one of them and he/she will have to do everything to prove to the other that their relationship is meant to be.
Like I said at the beginning, it was so so good to be back in the True North universe and to read about the previous couples.
This book might be one the best in this series so far. It was an emotional ride to read it, to read about May’s struggle but also such a joy. I was so glad that Sarina Bowen includes a « diverse » character, this character being May. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough bisexual hero/heroine in contemporary romances. Add to that the addiction part and we have a book treating 2 very important subjects. I also liked the fact that May’s family were more concerned about her addiction and that her sexuality wasn’t a problem for them. Sarina Bowen is one author who knows how to write diverse characters. We are talking about May here, but I also think about the M/M romance books she wrote.
In the same subject, the writing is beautiful and addictive. I was just a few pages into Speakeasy and I knew I would love this book and I wouldn’t be able to put it down. And that’s what happened. I read Speakeasy in one sitting. I needed to know Alec and May’s journey to their HEA.
I don’t know if Sarina Bowen will write more books in the True North series (I think she is) but I really hope so. I really need to put all these books in my bookshelf. Definitely one of my favourite series and Speakeasy might be one of my favourite book of 2018. The more time passes and the more I love this book!
I can’t recommend you enough this series! Yes so far there is 5 books but they are so worth it believe me.
